Bandstand Beds

Food growing in the heart of Clapham

We are a community garden, sustained by dedicated volunteers, aiming to get their hands dirty, get outside, grow vegetables and have a good time. Growing everything from squash to salad and veg for your Sunday roast.

We pride ourselves on providing an area for the local community to discover the joys and benefits of growing and cooking their own food, with the added benefit of taking home freshly picked fruit and vegetables.

Are you interested in the community, gardening, sustainability, the environment, your health or knowledge sharing? If the answer is yes, then drop in and see us.

Our garden is open…

Saturdays • We are a fun group of people who meet to garden between 10am and 1pm with tea and cake at around 11.30. There is a table at our main gate with freshly harvested produce which is available to the public for a donation. Some Saturdays we also hold a laidback lunch or bring and share picnic.

Keep Growing Mondays • A gardening session for the over 55s. A chance to get outdoors in the garden, relax and meet people.

Wednesday evenings • During the summer months we meet on a Wednesday evening from 6pm until around 7.30pm to garden and harvest veg.

If you would like to become a member of Bandstand Beds you can join here.

We’re working with Clapham Common Management Advisory Committee (CCMAC) to create a wildflower haven to bring beauty and biodiversity to the Common this year. The project has been awarded funding from the Mayor’s Greener City Fund, but…

An area of ground on the Common between the Spinney Nursery and our garden on Windmill Drive needs to have turf removed ready to plant the meadow. Work has already started, but there is a long way to go.

Fancy a free gym session on the Common, then why not join us for digging the dirt this Saturday - followed by tea and cake?

If you can’t make it but want to know more about the project, email ccmacvolunteers@gmail.com or follow @colourcommon1 on Twitter

We're working with Clapham Common Management Advisory Committee (CCMAC) to create and amazing wildflower haven on the Common, opposite out garden on Windmill Drive.

The plan is to have strips of wildflower planting running across the grass and with the help of GoodGym Lambeth digging off the top layer of turn one of these is now almost complete (pic right).

But there are about five more to do... HELP!

Fancy a free workout on the Common this Saturday? Then get down digging with us! And for those who fancy something a little more sedate there's loads of seed sowing to be done.

But it won't be all work and no play, we'll be round off the afternoon with Easter eggs (maybe hidden) and
    hot-cross buns.

Sounds like your idea of a fun afternoon on the Common? Then head for our garden on Windmill Drive at 1pm.

    Everyone welcome!

Nothing beats a plant you’ve got for free, and that’s just what you get when you take cuttings from established plants.

Rosemary, sage, mint (probably the easiest of all) and many more herbs can all be propagated from cuttings, and in this workshop you’ll be shown how to do it.

It's easier than you think - and you'll be doubling plant stock in no time!

Every so often during the summer we have a glut of produce in the garden, such as courgettes or apples, and one way to make sure not of this lovely food goes to waste is to preserve it as chutney.

If you’ve ever tasted our chutneys you’ll know they're delicious - and now you can make them too!.

During this session Diana Linskey will give a step by step guide on how she makes our chutneys and will share some top tips she’s picked up through her years of jam making and preserving.

7:15 pmMeet at Clapham Common Bandstand

There's something quite magical about walking across the Common at dusk and spotting a bat fluttering across the skyline. And if you never seen a bat, or wouldn't know one if you did, then joining this walk with Iain is something you really must do!

The walk will kick-off from the Bandstand and visit areas where Iain has spotted bats on previous occasions.

Iain told us: 'We usually do a tour of Mount Pond as this as this is always good for bats. But I think this time we can do a short detour to the outside of and around the community garden as there must be bats now using that area as a prime foraging spot.'

The walks usually last an hour. It's a free event and everyone is welcome!

Each year at the end of summer we hold our feast which is always great fun, and this year we're planning to make it better than ever!

We're working with Lambeth Council and Clapham Common Management Advisory Committee (CCMAC) to combine our annual feast event, part of Capital Growth's Urban Harvest, with Car Free Day on Saturday 22 September.

Windmill Drive will be closed and as well as food served in our garden the road will be alive with
fun-filled activities and entertainment, including a pedal powered PA system with singing and spoken word,
    hula-hooping, storytelling and ping-pong.

There also be a cycle zone with cargo and adapted bike try outs, Dr Bike, a bike market to buy a bike or bring a disused one to sell, and pedal powered smoothies.

And that's not all... Beside the wildflower haven created this summer by CCMAC, there'll be bugs and beasties workshops and a petting zoo where you can make friends with some unusual animals.

Sound like fun, then come join us for the afternoon. Everyone welcome!
