Bandstand Beds Association (BBA)

Food growing in the heart of Clapham

We are a community garden run by dedicated volunteers, aiming to get their hands dirty, get outside, grow vegetables and have a good time.

We pride ourselves on providing an area for the local community to discover the joys and benefits of growing and cooking their own food, with the added benefit of taking home freshly picked fruit and vegetables.

We growing everything from squash to salad and veg for Sunday roast. And all of this lovely local produce is available to our members and passers-by for a donation, which goes towards keeping our garden growing.

Are you interested in your gardening, sustainability, the environment, your health and wellbeing and your local community? If the answer to all or any of these is yes, then why not join us? For information about membership click on this link.

We garden on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, Wednesday evenings from 5 to 7pm (summertime only)  and run an over 55s Grown-Up Gardening session on Monday from 2 – 4pm in partnership with Wild Times – part of Froglife’s Leaping Forward for Dementia project. From Monday 17 January until 21 March  2022 these sessions will take place indoors at The Spinney, a short walk from our garden on Windmill Drive, Clapham Common,

For more information about taking part in our gardening sessions click on this link.

Our community garden is self-sustaining and has been built with grant funding, in-kind support from Lambeth Council and generous donations from visitors to our produce stall on Saturday mornings.

This year we have received financial support from The National Lottery Community Fund, Leyland SDM’s Give London a Lift and Waitrose & Partners.

We'll be joining Capital Growth’s national day of edible action by hosting a Good to Grow event in our community garden.

We’ll be sowing sunflowers, squash and pea shoots to grow at home on windowsills, ready to plant outdoors when the weather is warmer.

It''s been a tough time for lots of older people during Covid, including lots of our members who have been unable to come along the garden because they've been shielding.

Now, with most over 55s having received the vaccine and with the easing of restrictions, we're able to invite our members back along to the Monday Grown Up Gardening sessions.

Our garden's a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the Common, potter among the plants, meet people and chat – so why not join us!

For information about Bandstand Beds membership click on this link.

We are regulating numbers in the garden so if you would like to attend please email ccbandstandbeds@gmail.com

At the height of summer there is often a glut of fruit and veg harvested from the garden and a great way to save some for a rainy day – or Christmas with cheese and crackers – is to make chutney.

One of our founder members, Diana Linskey, is a dab hand at chutney making and it’s become an annual event for her to share her skills with us – see our website.

Diana has some fabulous recipes (see link) including a delicious Seasonal Chutney – a perfect gift for friends.

During the session Diana will take you on a step-by-step guide from chopping veg to jarring up the finished product, and everyone will have a jar of chutney to take home!

If you would like to take part in this workshop, email ccbandstandbeds@gmail.com.

To cover the cost of some of the ingredients and materials for this workshop we ask for a pay what you can afford donation.

This workshop will be run in accordance with the Government’s Covid-19 safety guidelines.

Ever wanted save seeds from your own or friends’ plants but have no idea how to go about it?

Join us for this workshop with Patrick McCabe to learn the basics of saving seed to become a more self-sufficient gardener and save money, by not having to buy commercially produced seeds.

Patrick McCabe has been involved in community gardening on Lambeth housing estates for the past five years. He has a particular interest in in food growing and working in partnership with organisations to create community gardening spaces. Patrick is an active supporter of London Freedom Seed Bank.

During this workshop you will learn the principals of propagation, how some plants have male and female flowers leading to cross pollination, while others are self-fertile and will produce seeds that are ‘true’ to the parent plant. You will discover simple ways of saving seeds from plants in our garden, and you will be able take some home to sow at the start of next year’s growing season.

This workshop is open to everyone over the age of 16*.

Since BBA began in 2013 we’ve held an annual feast to celebrate our summer’s harvest, but sadly due to Covid restrictions in 2020 this wasn’t possible.

So, this year we’re planning an extra-special event – a Feast & Car Free Celebration on Clapham Common’s Windmill Drive.

As well as feastilicious food made from our homegrown produce there’ll be lots of fun-filled activities, scarecrow building, storytelling and wildlife workshops.

Froglife, Butterfly Conservation, Dr Bike and Clapham Common organisations will be joining us for this fantastic community event.

We hope you’ll come along and join us too – everyone welcome!

Not sure where to find us on Windmill Drive? Click on this link.

Since Bandstand Beds Association (BBA) began we’ve had a long-held ambition to compost all our garden waste.

Thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund and in-kind support from Lambeth Council in August worked started on installing three composting bays on the site adjacent to our garden. Now complete, we will be using these new bays for this composting for beginners workshop with Dan Priddle.

Dan teaches permaculture and no-dig gardening. His interests are in food growing and wildlife habitat in the urban environment, and he lives in South London.

In this workshop Dan will cover the basics of composting to create a good quality soil enhancer for the garden. He will also share tips on organic matter that is good to add to our compost bays and things that should be avoided.
